When buying aggregates, it is important to know exactly how much you should buy. The volume of aggregate can be deceptive. Here’s how to know what area a tone of gravel will cover so you can deduce how much you need for your project.
Here at JT Few, we have decades in experience of providing gravel and recycled aggregates to businesses and homes throughout Suffolk and Essex. Our main areas of operation are Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich, Woodbridge, and Southwold. Between these locations, we have helped thousands of satisfied clients to accurately create fully finished driveways, decorate landscapes, and improve that first impression clients have of a business.
Our point? You don’t get to be one of the biggest recycled aggregate producers in the country without learning a thing or two about gravel. This article should help you figure out how much you need to order, if you want to cover a specified area of gravel. Let’s discuss what you need to get started.
Where to Buy Gravel in Ipswich?
First, figure out where to buy your gravel from. Ultimately, we offer excellent rates on recycled aggregates. This option could save you money compared to buying fresh material. It is economically better, saves the environment by limiting mining practices, and brings new life to old material. We create gravel by assisting in demolitions. Once demolished, we put it through a crushing machine and sort it into the correct colour, size, and shape to redistribute.
How Much Gravel Do I Need?
To determine how much gravel, you will need for a project, you should first measure your space. Usually, we work out the square metres we need to cover. To do this, you measure the width of the space by the breadth of the space. A space that is 4 metres long by 4 metres wide will total 16 metres squared. This is how you work out the space you need to cover so that you can work out how much gravel to order.
We always suggest that your gravel should be about 5 cm deep. This gives you plenty of layers of stones, which will inevitably become displaced. The amount of gravel you therefore need becomes the equation length x breadth x depth, where depth is 5cm.
Next, we look at the size of gravel bags. Usually, we sell aggregate in 25kg bags. However, you may wish to buy it loose, but we will get to that in a moment. First, let’s talk about those 25kg bags. 1 of these bags should cover an area of 0.5 metre squared to a depth of 50mm (5cm). Ergo, if you have a driveway that is 20m by 5m, or 100 metres squared, you will need 200 bags.
How Much Driveway will 1 Ton of Gravel Cover?
Put into tons, this same equation works out how much gravel we will need. You can use a gravel calculator, or you can do the maths. 1 ton of gravel is around 40 bags at 25kg. Therefore 1 ton of gravel should cover an area of about 20 metres squared.
